Why our age differs

Official is US R. We say 15+ because suicide themes, depression, and frequent strong language make an older-teen watch, though the film is more emotional than graphic

Our take

Cake is an adult drama about chronic pain, grief, and a support group shadowed by suicide. Strong language is frequent, with many f-words and sharp insults. Pain pills, talk of a drug dealer, and drinking sit beside depression and thoughts of not wanting to go on. Sex talk appears, including crude jokes, without turning pornographic. We land at US R and up because suicide themes and the emotional weight need a mature viewer

Uplifting themes

Care from a housekeeper and small human connections still matter when someone is stuck. The film values honesty about pain over tidy uplift Silvana shows steady patience and practical care. Claire is understandable and often unkind, which is the point of the character study

Story (may spoil tone)

After having visions of a member of her support group who killed herself, a woman who also suffers with chronic pain seeks out the widower of the suicide.

Talk after watching

  • Claire's pain changes how she treats everyone around her. How can families stay patient without accepting cruelty?
  • The story sits with suicide loss and chronic illness together. What support actually helps when someone is stuck in both?
