Our take

Incantation is a found-footage style horror film about a mother trying to shield her child from a curse after a forbidden ritual. Possession talk, ghosts, blood, corpses, and frequent strong language build a grim atmosphere. A young child is in real peril for long stretches, which many families will find the hardest part. We land at 16 and up because sustained horror, injury, and self-harm and suicide content need older teens

Uplifting themes

A mother's drive to protect her child is the emotional thread. The film spends more time on dread than on clear uplift Parental love is real even when choices go wrong. Adults often model reckless curiosity that puts others at risk

Story (may spoil tone)

Inspired by the true story of a family who believed they were possessed by spirits. This film follows a woman who must protect her child from a curse.

A news clip describes a naked junior-high-age girl found outdoors, which is unsettling in context. There is no romantic sex scene; the nudity sits in a grim report

A psychiatric clinic and talk of who is or is not possessed blur mental distress with supernatural fear. Parents may want to separate illness talk from curse lore afterward

Talk after watching

  • The film asks viewers to take part in ritual gestures on screen. How do you feel about movies that break the fourth wall that way?
  • A parent puts a child at risk while chasing answers. What would you prioritise if fear and love pulled in different directions?
