Why our age differs

Official is M. We say 15+ because frequent strong language and the emotional intensity of a divorce fought in front of a child land harder than a lighter M drama

Our take

Marriage Story is an intimate adult drama about a marriage collapsing across two coasts, with therapy rooms, lawyers, and arguments that cut deep. Strong language, especially the f-word, pours out in fights a child can overhear. Wine, affair talk, and the emotional wreckage of splitting a family sit at the centre. The sustained yelling, adult sexual talk and a child caught in his parents' split make this a heavy watch for teens.

Uplifting themes

Love can remain even when a marriage cannot, and co-parenting still asks for care. The film values honesty and responsibility over winning every fight Both parents love their child and keep trying, clumsily, to show up. Their worst moments are also on full display, so modelling is mixed

Story (may spoil tone)

A stage director and an actress struggle through a grueling, coast-to-coast divorce that pushes them to their personal extremes.

The f-word arrives in waves during arguments, lawyer talk, and private meltdowns, with the s-word and other insults close behind. A child even asks what some of the swearing means

Affair talk, porn comparisons, and frank remarks about sex come up as the marriage unravels. There is no graphic sex scene, but the dialogue is adult and blunt

Wine at dinners and evenings is a recurring comfort and a point of judgment in the custody fight. Drinking stays social, not a drug-fuelled spiral

A character mentions pretending to cut herself as a dark family joke for an older relative. It is talk only, without a method shown

Their young son is on screen for custody handovers, car rides, and the fallout of parental rage. He is not beaten, but he is clearly caught in adult conflict he cannot fix

Therapy, panic, shame, and the emotional crash of divorce sit at the heart of the film. Parents will feel how anxiety and anger feed each other once lawyers enter the room

The couple grieves the life they built even while they dismantle it. Loss of a shared future, not a funeral plot, is the ache that stays

Talk after watching

  • A child hears more of the fight than either parent wants. How do adults protect kids when a relationship is ending badly?
  • Lawyers sharpen every grievance. When does standing up for yourself tip into hurting the other person on purpose?
