Why our age differs

Official is M. We say 15+ because the shark attacks are sustained and the injury detail feels closer to a harder thriller than a lighter adventure

Our take

The Shallows puts a lone surfer against a great white in clear coastal water, and the movie never pretends the animal is a cuddly mascot. Tension stays high through circling, sudden lunges, and injury that leaves her losing blood while she invents ways to stay alive. You will hear a few f-words and the s-word under stress. A hangover joke appears early, then the film becomes almost pure survival dread. The realistic shark attacks and bloody wound focus make this a harder survival watch than the short runtime suggests

Uplifting themes

Resourcefulness, staying calm enough to invent a next step, and refusing to give up are the human through-line under the fear Nancy keeps thinking, adapting, and protecting what she can even while injured. Determination is the model more than perfection

Story (may spoil tone)

While surfing on a secluded beach, Nancy finds herself in the feeding grounds of a great white shark. Though stranded only 200 yards from shore, survival proves to be the ultimate test of wills, requiring all of her ingenuity, resourcefulness, and fortitude.

A great white hunting in shallow water is the whole engine: circling, waiting, then striking. The isolation and the short distance to a shore she cannot safely reach keep dread high

The camera focuses on a large, bloody leg wound after a shark attack. Other attacks leave victims badly injured, including one man with much of his body bitten away. The blood and injury detail are hard to avoid

Talk after watching

  • Nancy has to invent solutions with almost nothing on hand. What would you try first if the obvious escape looked impossible?
  • The beach looks calm while the danger stays close. Have you ever misjudged a place because it looked peaceful from a distance?
