Our take
A PG live-action retelling of the animated hit. Rated for intense action and peril. Dragon fire, aerial fights and a giant creature climax feel more visceral in live action than in animation. Vikings with prosthetic limbs appear, without blood or corpses. Strong friendship and anti-prejudice themes suit most kids 10 and up; sensitive younger viewers may need company.

On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup stands apart, defying centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Talk after watching
- Hiccup tries to understand dragons instead of fighting them. When has listening changed your view of someone?
- Live-action dragons look more real than cartoon ones. Does that make the action scarier or more exciting?
