Our take

Rated MA 15+ for strong bloody violence and gore plus language, matching the brutal video-game source. Johnny Cage joins Earthrealm fighters in interdimensional battles where characters are dismembered, stabbed and crushed with graphic blood spurts. Demonic villains, weapon threat, comic sex jokes and a brief cocaine reference also feature, with frequent strong profanity throughout. Heroism and loyalty appear, but the film is built for mature action fans who already tolerate game-style fatalities.

Uplifting themes

Earthrealm defenders emphasise teamwork, sacrifice and standing up to tyranny amid the carnage Heroic fighters model loyalty, though many relish violence and Johnny Cage starts out as selfish comic relief

Story (may spoil tone)

The fan favorite champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.

Talk after watching

  • The movie adapts a game famous for over-the-top fatalities. When does faithful fan service cross into excess for your family?
  • Johnny Cage starts as a selfish actor before joining the fight. Does his arc give the carnage any emotional anchor?
