Our take
A live-action family comedy based on the game, rated PG for action, language, rude humor and scary images. Blocky monster chases, bloodless sword fights and occasional mild swearing show up. Best for about 10 and up; light innuendo and a jumpy Nether sequence may bother younger or sensitive kids.
Uplifting themes
Teamwork, imagination and standing up to bullies drive the story The teen hero builds confidence while protecting his sister
Story (may spoil tone)
Four misfits find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they'll have to master this world while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve.
