Why our age differs

Official is PG. We say 6 because the alternate world turns moodier, with witches and a darker villain that can unsettle smaller children, though it stays bloodless.

Our take

Shrek Forever After has Shrek wishing his life away, then fighting to get it back. Its alternate Far Far Away is darker than earlier films, with witches, an ogre resistance, and a sly villain. The battles are bloodless, while kisses, family warmth, and gentle crude jokes keep the overall feel light. Language is very mild. Around 6 and up fits, with a parent alongside younger children.

Uplifting themes

A strong 'be grateful for what you have' message runs throughout as Shrek learns his ordinary life was the real treasure. Family, friendship, and second chances carry the ending Fiona leads a resistance with real backbone, Shrek owns his mistake and works to put things right, and friends rally around him. The lesson about valuing people over wishes lands clearly

Story (may spoil tone)

A midlife-crisis burdened Shrek, longing for the days of when he felt like a real ogre, makes a pact with magic deal-maker Rumpelstiltskin. But when he's duped and sent to a twisted version of Far Far Away—where Rumpelstiltskin is king, ogres are hunted, and he and Fiona have never met—he sets out to restore his world and reclaim his true love.
