Our take

Susan becomes enormous and joins a group of monsters facing an alien attack. Monsters vs Aliens is mostly comic action, though the capture, fights and large-scale destruction could worry a younger child. We would start at 7.

Uplifting themes

Susan learns self-acceptance and teamwork beats going it alone. Outcasts become heroes Susan grows into a brave leader, and the monsters support each other. The president listens by the end

Talk after watching

  • Susan feels like a freak until the monsters treat her as leader. When have you felt different and found your people?
  • The army locks Susan away at first. How should adults listen when someone changes in a way they do not understand?
