Milly Alcock's gritty DC space odyssey follows Kara Zor-El on a vengeance quest. Despite an M rating, expect frequent combat, implied sex trafficking of women, heavy drinking, child peril and planet-destruction flashbacks. Bar brawls, pirate attacks, cold-blooded killings and family murders push it darker than typical family superhero fare. Trauma and grief drive much of the tone. Best for older teens already comfortable with mature comic-book material.
Uplifting themes
Themes of helping others, compassion and choosing justice over vengeance run through the story, mixed with dark material Kara grows toward heroism, though she begins as a hard-drinking cynic. Ruthye shows courage seeking justice for her family
Story (may spoil tone)
When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.
