Why our age differs

Official is PG. We lean to 10 because the gun threats, shrink-ray deaths, and a scene with a young girl in danger carry more weight than the jokes suggest

Our take

This is a breezy Marvel origin story about an ex-burglar who gets a second chance as a shrinking superhero. Most of it is played for laughs, with a father trying to win back his daughter at its heart. The action still brings guns, a few deaths, and a villain who menaces a little girl near the end, so it earns its edge. Mild swearing and comic-book fights push it a bit past the usual family-cartoon crowd. Steady primary-schoolers who already enjoy Marvel will handle it well with you nearby

Uplifting themes

Second chances, honesty, and showing up for family drive the whole story. Scott learns that being a hero is about who he protects, not what he steals. There is a warm thread about earning back trust Scott grows from an unreliable ex-con into someone who keeps his word, and Hope proves more than capable beside him. The mentor figures model patience and teamwork, even when they clash

Story (may spoil tone)

Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Doctor Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

Scott pulls off a break-in and the finale turns into shrinking punch-ups, drawn guns, and a bomb threat. It stays comic-book action with quick hits and almost no blood. A couple of henchmen are killed off by the villain's shrink tech

Mostly damn and hell, with a scattered s-word and one son of a b. It sits in the mildly salty zone for a Marvel film, with nothing aggressive. Swear-sensitive homes will clock a handful of moments

Light romantic sparks between Scott and Hope lead to one awkward near-kiss and a cheeky bedroom quip. There is no nudity and nothing beyond flirting here. You will see that beat. It is not played as a sex scene

A grown-up mentions a wine tasting and adults drink socially in a couple of scenes. It stays in the background, with no focus on getting drunk. Easy to miss if you are not listening for it. Not a drinking story

The villain's shrink ray reduces living things to a dark smear, and he turns coldly menacing when cornered. One tense scene puts a frightened child in his sights. Younger kids may find the eerie shrinking imagery unsettling

In the climax the villain shrinks down and stalks Scott's young daughter in her own bedroom. She is scared and in real danger for a short stretch before she is rescued. It is brief but may rattle sensitive kids

Guns are drawn and pointed in several scenes, and the villain's weapon makes people vanish into a dark smear. Deaths happen but the camera does not linger and there is little blood

Loss sits quietly in the background, from a mentor who lost his wife to a dad aching over time apart from his girl. It is gentle and never dwelt on. It sits under the story. There is no long funeral stretch

Talk after watching

  • Scott breaks the law early on but wants to be a better dad. How do we talk about second chances and owning past mistakes?
  • The hero shrinks to win fights that would be dangerous at full size. Which parts felt like fantasy and which felt real?
