Our take

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is a fast spy adventure built around huge stunts, including a climb on the Burj Khalifa, car chases, and shootouts. Fighting, explosions, and gunfire are frequent, but injury detail and blood remain limited. Language is mild and sexual content is minimal. The danger is tense without feeling grim. We put it at around 13 and up for teens who already enjoy action films.

Uplifting themes

Teamwork, trust, and sacrifice for the greater good run right through the mission, with the crew covering for each other under fire. Characters own their mistakes and push on. The job clearly matters more than any one ego Ethan and his team are brave, loyal, and quick-thinking, and they look out for one another at every turn. They solve problems with skill and nerve, though always through action. They make appealing, capable heroes for this kind of film

Story (may spoil tone)

Ethan Hunt and his team are racing against time to track down a dangerous terrorist named Hendricks, who has gained access to Russian nuclear launch codes and is planning a strike on the United States. An attempt to stop him ends in an explosion causing severe destruction to the Kremlin and the IMF to be implicated in the bombing, forcing the President to disavow them. No longer being aided by the government, Ethan and his team chase Hendricks around the globe, although they might still be too late to stop a disaster.

The action barely lets up, with hand-to-hand fights, gun battles, a Kremlin bombing, and a long chase through a blinding sandstorm. People are shot and killed, but the injury detail stays light. It is intense in pace more than in blood

A few set-pieces play on real tension, like Ethan dangling off the Burj Khalifa and that sandstorm chase. Nothing here is horror, but the heights and near-misses can rattle younger viewers. The villain is a terrorist chasing nuclear codes

Guns are everywhere and several characters are killed, though the camera keeps blood to a minimum. Knives and a sniper feature in a couple of the tenser beats. Deaths land with impact without lingering on the wounds

The story briefly touches on Ethan's loss of his wife. It adds emotional weight without becoming a major focus, though sensitive children may ask about it
