Our take

Mission: Impossible - Fallout moves from fist fights and shootouts to car and helicopter chases as Ethan tries to stop a nuclear threat. The action is frequent and hard-hitting but rarely bloody. Language is moderate, including regular use of the s-word and one f-word. We put it at around 13 and up for teens already comfortable with long, intense action sequences.

Uplifting themes

Loyalty, self-sacrifice and refusing to trade innocent lives for the mission sit at the heart of the story. The team repeatedly risks everything to protect people, which gives families a real thread to talk about The hero is driven, brave and fiercely protective of his team and of bystanders, choosing people over the easy win again and again. He is a strong, if reckless, model of loyalty under pressure

Story (may spoil tone)

When an IMF mission ends badly, the world is faced with dire consequences. As Ethan Hunt takes it upon himself to fulfill his original briefing, the CIA begin to question his loyalty and his motives. The IMF team find themselves in a race against time, hunted by assassins while trying to prevent a global catastrophe.

Hand-to-hand fights, shoot-outs, foot and vehicle chases and a white-knuckle helicopter duel run through the whole film. The action is intense and frequent, with many deaths, but it keeps blood and injury detail low

The s-word and son-of-a-b-word insults appear regularly, along with hell and damn. One clear f-word lands in a tense exchange

Romantic history between a couple of characters simmers in the background, with the odd suggestive line. There is no sex or nudity on screen

A party cover story has a target drugged to look like a harmless drunk, and there is the odd social drink. Alcohol stays incidental, and there is no drug use of note

Frightening Moderate A threat to detonate stolen nuclear cores and chilling talk of mass cas…

A threat to detonate stolen nuclear cores and chilling talk of mass casualties give the film a tense, high-stakes edge. A few stunts and near-misses are nervy, though the tone stays heroic

Guns are everywhere, people are shot and killed, and corpses appear as part of the plot. The firearms look real and the kills are frequent, but the camera stays off graphic wounds

Talk after watching

  • Ethan keeps risking the mission to avoid sacrificing innocent people. Do you think that is the right call under pressure?
  • The film makes dangerous stunts look thrilling and survivable. How do real stunt performers stay safe doing work like this?
