Our take

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation is a fast spy thriller with gunfights, close combat, and large stunts involving bikes, cars, and planes. Violence is frequent but rarely bloody. A near-drowning scene and a prolonged assassination attempt are especially tense. There is mild language, social drinking, and little sexual content. Teens around 13 and up who enjoy action should be comfortable with it.

Uplifting themes

Loyalty, teamwork, and doing the right thing against the odds run through the story, and the team trusts each other when it counts. The focus, though, is squarely on the mission and the thrills The agents are brave, loyal, and quick-witted, and they work as a tight team. They also lie, fight, and bend the rules constantly, so they are heroic but not clean-cut examples

Story (may spoil tone)

Ethan and team take on their most impossible mission yet—eradicating 'The Syndicate', an International and highly-skilled rogue organization committed to destroying the IMF.

Action is frequent and hard-hitting, with shootouts, fist fights, chokings, and people killed by gunfire across the runtime. It is more skilful than gory, but the body count and the intensity of the fighting are high

Mild swearing crops up here and there, with words like hell and damn and the occasional stronger term. It stays occasional and never turns into a barrage

There is some sleek flirting and a sense of attraction between two leads, and one character appears in a fitted dress. No sex or nudity, just a bit of charged chemistry

Characters drink socially in a few scenes, including champagne at a glamorous opera night. It is background texture, with no drunkenness or focus on alcohol

A couple of sequences crank up real tension, including a character held underwater and a drawn-out assassination attempt. The dread is brief and action-driven, closer to a thrill than to horror, but a few moments are genuinely nerve-wracking

Guns are everywhere, from pistols to sniper rifles, and several people are shot or killed on screen. Injuries are shown without much blood, so it reads as tense action without turning graphic

Ethan holds his breath underwater for a long time and clings to moving vehicles. The breath-holding in particular is a stunt children should not copy

Talk after watching

  • The agents lie and break rules to get the job done. When, if ever, do good ends justify those means?
  • The team wins by trusting each other completely. What makes someone worth that kind of trust?
