Our take

The Bourne Ultimatum follows an operative searching for the truth about his past while enemies close in. Chases, close-range shootings, and hand-to-hand fights arrive often and feel physical, though blood is limited. Language is fairly mild, and sex and drug content are minimal. We put it at around 14 and up because the intensity rarely lets up.

Uplifting themes

Bourne is chasing the truth about a program that abused its own people, and the film cares about accountability. That thread gives the chases a point beyond the thrills He is skilled, controlled and sometimes shows restraint, but he is still a man who hurts people to survive. There is discipline to admire, with a clear cost attached

Story (may spoil tone)

Bourne is brought out of hiding once again by reporter Simon Ross who is trying to unveil Operation Blackbriar, an upgrade to Project Treadstone, in a series of newspaper columns. Information from the reporter stirs a new set of memories, and Bourne must finally uncover his dark past while dodging The Company's best efforts to eradicate him.

Tension runs high through stalking, surveillance and chases that can rattle younger viewers. It is not horror, but the constant threat and loud, jolting set-pieces keep the pressure on

Real-looking handguns are used throughout and several characters are shot dead. Blood is kept to a minimum for this kind of thriller, so the deaths register through impact more than through gore

Bourne drives through traffic at speed and improvises weapons in close fights. The grounded style may make these actions seem more achievable than they are

Talk after watching

  • Bourne was shaped by a program that stripped away his choices. What does the film say about following orders?
  • The fights look realistic instead of flashy. Does that change how violence lands for you?
