Our take

This is a tense, fast spy thriller driven by chases, surveillance, and brutal hand-to-hand combat. There are frequent gunfights, assassinations, and a huge destructive car chase, though the violence is intense more than gory. The language is moderate, with the s-word and similar words scattered through, and there is no real sex or drug content. It works for teens who already handle action thrillers. The relentless pace and body count are a lot for younger viewers

Uplifting themes

The film values truth, accountability, and refusing to look away from hard facts, even when powerful people want them buried. That thread is quiet but it is there Bourne is principled in his own way, and an analyst risks her career to do the right thing. Their choices stand out against plenty of ruthless ones The plot circles real debates about government surveillance and privacy, which can spark a good conversation afterward. It is a thriller first, not a civics lesson

Story (may spoil tone)

The most dangerous former operative of the CIA is drawn out of hiding to uncover hidden truths about his past.

The tone is tense and urgent, with stalking, sudden violence, and crowds in danger during a riot and a shooting. It plays as suspense, with no horror imagery. Sensitive viewers may find the sustained pressure draining

Guns are used throughout and deaths are shown, including point-blank shootings. Injuries are clear but the camera keeps the blood fairly restrained. The weapon threat is constant

The hand-to-hand fighting and reckless driving are staged as skilled spycraft. It reads as stylised action, but the techniques are front and centre

Bourne is haunted by buried memories and guilt, and the film touches on the mental toll of his past. It stays a quiet background thread while the action takes over

A death close to Bourne drives much of his search, and loss hangs over the story. It is handled through tension more than tears, and it never turns into a weepie

Talk after watching

  • Bourne is haunted by what he did and what was done to him. How does the film treat the cost of that kind of work?
  • Spy agencies track people through phones and street cameras. How much surveillance feels okay to you?
