Our take

Tenet is a loud spy puzzle with gunfights, crashes and a threat to the whole world. The violence has little blood, but an interrogation and a husband's threats toward his wife bring a more personal menace. Swearing is steady, and younger viewers may find the plot as unsettling as the action. We would start at 13.

Uplifting themes

The hero risks everything for people who may never know his name, and teamwork matters. The world is grey and secretive, so the lesson is about sacrifice more than clear right and wrong The main characters are loyal, brave, and quick to look after each other. They also lie and kill when the mission calls for it, so they are admirable only up to a point Talk of entropy, time, and nuclear risk may spark curiosity about physics. The science is loose, so it works better as a conversation starter than a lesson

Story (may spoil tone)

Armed with only one word - Tenet - and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real time.

Gunfights, car chases, explosions, and several fist fights drive the story. A tense interrogation involves torture, and a villain holds a gun on his own wife. Most hits are fast and loud, with little blood

The s-word appears fairly often, along with the b-word, hell, and a couple of f-words in the heat of the action. Nothing is constant, but it is more than a family film would use

Characters drink vodka and wine at a yacht party and during meetings. There is no drug use, and drinking never becomes the focus of a scene

A ticking-clock plot, booming music, and a menacing villain keep tension high for most of the film. Fires, crashes, and fights that run backwards can look strange and unsettling

Agents carry suicide pills so they cannot be captured, and the idea comes up in the opening act. Nothing is shown in detail, but it is a heavy thing to put in front of younger viewers

A rich husband controls and frightens his wife, reminding her he can take her young son away. The abuse is mostly threats and cold put-downs, and it hangs over much of the story

Bullet wounds, a few bloody injuries, and bodies appear, usually for a second or two. The camera does not stay on the damage, and weapons are mostly guns and explosives

Talk after watching

  • How did the film's rules about time change the way you felt about the choices the hero makes?
  • Why might someone accept a huge personal cost to protect people who will never know about it?
