Shaun of the Dead is a British zombie comedy with real horror beneath the jokes. Strong swearing runs throughout, and zombie attacks can be graphic. Characters also lose people they love, giving the story moments of genuine grief. We put it at MA 15+ and up for older viewers already comfortable with gore and horror.
Uplifting themes
Under the mayhem it is about a slacker finally stepping up, and the group only survives by sticking together. Loyalty and a bit of growing up carry real weight. The lesson sits beside a lot of crude chaos Shaun is a flawed hero who learns to take responsibility for the people he loves, while others panic or turn selfish. There is courage here, mixed with plenty of bad choices. That blend gives families something to chew on
Story (may spoil tone)
Shaun lives a supremely uneventful life, which revolves around his girlfriend, his mother, and, above all, his local pub. This gentle routine is threatened when the dead return to life and make strenuous attempts to snack on ordinary Londoners.

Zombies are fought off with cricket bats, pool cues, and bare hands, and a few attacks turn properly bloody as people are bitten and torn at. The comedy never fully softens those beats. Several characters die on screen

Sexual content is light and talk based, with a passing crack about an ex adult-film star and some romantic chat. No sex scene or nudity stands out. It sits well behind the horror and the swearing

A lot of the story lives in the pub, with heavy drinking treated as normal and a hangover driving the plot. One mate is openly described as selling a bit of weed, and there is social smoking too. Alcohol is part of the furniture here

The undead shuffle, swarm, and corner people in dark streets and a besieged pub, with a few real shocks between the jokes. It plays as horror comedy, so scares arrive with laughs. Younger teens may still find the siege tense

A man is pulled apart by zombies, with bloody wounds shown up close. A rifle and improvised weapons appear during the final stand. The gore grows heavier near the end

Loved ones are bitten and lost in the second half, including a painful farewell to a parent. The comedy gives way to genuine sadness in those scenes
