Our take

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back follows Reacher as he tries to clear an army major and protect a teenage girl from hired killers. Fights and gunfire are frequent, and the teen is pursued and held at gunpoint. Moderate swearing adds to the tension, though blood is fairly limited. We put it at around 13 and up, ideally as a family watch for younger teens.

Uplifting themes

Loyalty, protecting the vulnerable, and clearing a friend's name drive Reacher, and an unlikely found-family bond forms along the way. The good guys stay principled, even when rough. It rewards standing up for others Reacher is brave and loyal but settles most problems with his fists, while Major Turner is a capable, no-nonsense lead. The teen slowly earns their trust. Strong characters, with violence as the usual answer

Story (may spoil tone)

Years after resigning command of an elite military police unit, the nomadic, righter-of-wrongs Reacher is drawn back into the life he left behind when his friend and successor, Major Susan Turner is framed for espionage. Reacher will stop at nothing to prove her innocence and to expose the real perpetrators behind the killings of his former soldiers.

Reacher trades hard punches, breaks bones, and exchanges gunfire across chases and a knife-edge finale. People are shot and killed, but the camera keeps blood light for the rating. The fighting is frequent and the threat feels constant

Coarse language is steady without reaching the heaviest words, including the s-word, a-word, and words like b-word and dickhead. It spikes in arguments and fights. Strong in places, but not throughout

Sexual content is light and verbal, with a reference to a mother's prostitution arrest and some mild innuendo around a shared hotel suite. There is no sex scene or nudity. Romantic tension stays unspoken

Alcohol barely registers, limited to a mention of wine over dinner. There is no drug use. It sits so far in the background most families will miss it

A teenage girl is stalked and threatened by a cold professional killer, which gives the chase a nasty edge. It stays tense without tipping into outright horror. The menace is grounded and real-world

A teenage girl is hunted, grabbed, and held at gunpoint to pressure Reacher. She is in danger through much of the second half, and her fear is taken seriously

Realistic handguns and rifles are drawn, aimed, and fired throughout, and several characters die. Wounds are shown briefly without dwelling on gore. A tense standoff closes things out with guns drawn around a hostage

Reacher's fights, gun handling, and improvised escapes look grounded and skilful. Children inclined to reenact action scenes may need a reminder not to copy them
