Our take

This is a fantasy action adventure with near-constant fighting, from duels and ambushes to a clash with a flesh-eating creature. Killing is frequent but stylised, with blood kept fairly restrained, and there is scattered mild swearing, mostly hell and damn, with an occasional harsher word. A father's killing drives the revenge plot, and there is light romance plus some genre sensuality. Monsters and demon talk add menace without tipping into real horror. It fits early teens who already handle fantasy battle films.

Uplifting themes

Justice, loyalty, and standing up to a tyrant run through the quest. The idea that courage matters sits beside a lot of problem-solving by sword, which is worth flagging with kids Mathayus is brave and loyal and his allies show grit, but he settles nearly everything with violence. Admirable nerve, a mixed example on how to handle conflict

Story (may spoil tone)

The heroic tale of young Mathayus and his relentless quest for justice against an evil and powerful villain, King Sargon. Mathayus faces heart-stopping tribulations during his adventurous, odds-defying trajectory toward his ultimate destiny: becoming the formidable warrior king of an ancient desert empire.

Sword-and-sandal action runs almost non-stop, with duels, ambushes, and a revenge quest fuelling the fights. Plenty of people are killed by blade and fist, though it plays as fantasy spectacle well short of realistic brutality

Romance simmers between the leads, with mild sensuality and a kiss, plus a couple of suggestive, skin-on-show moments that are common to the genre. Nothing explicit is shown

A flesh-eating creature and talk of demons bring some monster menace to the adventure. It leans more toward creepy spectacle than true horror, with a few loud, screeching moments that may jolt younger viewers

Blades, spears, and plenty of killing fill the screen, though the camera keeps wounds and blood fairly restrained. You will see bodies fall without the film dwelling on the damage

The hero's drive comes from his father's killing, which he witnesses young. The loss is treated as fuel for revenge more than tender mourning, but it is a real emotional hook that younger viewers may feel

Talk after watching

  • Mathayus is driven by revenge for his father. Does the film treat revenge as a good enough reason to fight?
  • Almost every problem here is solved with a weapon. What other ways could the characters have handled their enemies?
