This 2006 action film follows an American teen who is sent to live in Tokyo and gets pulled into the underground drift racing scene. It is loud and fast, with a lot of street racing, a few fistfights, and a gangster who makes real threats. The swearing and flirting sit at a teen level with no f-word, but one crash is serious and the stunts are easy to copy. We land at 13 and up because the racing looks cool and the crashes and threats are rougher than a typical family action film
Uplifting themes
Loyalty, respect, and learning from your mistakes are the main ideas, and the lead grows up a little along the way. The film also treats racing and payback as the way to settle problems, which is worth talking about A laid-back older friend mentors the lead, and the lead learns some humility. Many characters still break the law and chase status through racing There is a light look at Japanese car culture, drifting technique, and a handful of Japanese words picked up along the way. It is entertainment first, but it may spark curiosity about the cars and the culture

The s-word is used several times, along with hell, damn, b-word, and crude put-downs. It turns up in arguments, trash talk, and a few jokes. There is no f-word, so it stays on the milder side of teen action

A few characters smoke, and a crumpled beer can turns up in one joke. Drinking is part of the background at parties and hangouts, and it never becomes a storyline

Crashes leave wrecked cars and injured people, with a little blood on show. One death in a crash is upsetting, but the film does not linger on the body or the wounds

Street racing and high-speed drifting are shown as cool, and some of the races run through busy streets and public roads. Teens who love cars may be tempted to copy the stunts, so a chat about real risk is worthwhile

Racers bet cash and even put their cars on the line over the outcome of races. Winning money and status is a big part of the appeal, and the film treats it as a normal way to settle things

A friend's death hits the group late in the film and changes the mood for the final stretch. The grief is brief and quickly turns into anger and a hunger for payback

Talk after watching
- Drifting looks thrilling on screen, but it happens on public roads and mountain passes. What could go wrong if someone tried it for real?
- The new kid is an outsider at first and has to earn respect. What helps him fit in, and what does it cost him?
