Our take

Zodiac spends more time on the people chasing a killer than on the killings themselves. When an attack comes, it is sudden and chilling, and the letters and calls keep the dread going between them. The case consumes lives for years. We would wait until 16 for the violence and the mood that follows it.

Uplifting themes

Persistence and the search for facts are valued, though obsession has a price. The film shows how careful work and public records matter when others give up Reporters and detectives try to do honest work and care about victims. Some let the case damage their families and health, so their example comes with a warning A window into 1970s newspapers, police work, and code breaking built on a real case. Best for older teens who like true crime and can handle the dark subject matter

Story (may spoil tone)

Police conduct a manhunt for the Zodiac Killer, a serial killer who terrorized the San Francisco Bay Area during the late 1960s and early 1970s, taunting police with letters, bloodstained clothing, and ciphers mailed to newspapers.
