Dirty Harry is a hard crime thriller about a cop who bends rules while hunting a violent killer. Public shootings, a sexually assaulted young victim, and children taken hostage make the danger severe. Racist language and one f-word appear, while the hero's gun and methods are filmed as effective. The displayed rating is R18+, and we put it at R 18+ and up.
Uplifting themes
A partner tries to do the job without becoming the problem. The film gives that caution very little airtime. Most of the energy goes to the thrill of the chase The lead cop is loyal to victims and rotten at following limits. Viewers may admire the grit and miss the cost. Treat him as a warning dressed as a hero Adults can talk about what happens when a badge becomes a personal weapon. The film itself is not a civics class. Keep that talk for after, not during the shootouts
Story (may spoil tone)
When a madman dubbed 'Scorpio' terrorizes San Francisco, hard-nosed cop, Harry Callahan – famous for his take-no-prisoners approach to law enforcement – is tasked with hunting down the psychopath.

Sniper shots, a bank shootout, beatings, and a drawn-out hunt fill the runtime. The cop is rewarded for being ruthless. Blood and fear sit in ordinary city spaces, which makes it harsher than a comic punch-up

Hell, damn, the s-word, and b-word insults fly in precinct talk and street confrontations. The f-word lands late in a gun standoff. It is angry cop talk, not a teen comedy barrage

A rooftop swimmer is killed, and later a man is seen swimming nude at night. A crude joke describes a naked attacker. The bodies are there to unsettle, not to romance

A drunk driver is blamed for a family death in a quiet conversation. Nobody is partying on screen. It is backstory, not a bar crawl, and it still stings

A sniper can hit anyone, and the city waits on his next letter. Night chases and a missing-girl search keep the dread up for most of the film. It is crime terror, not a jump-scare carnival

Police are called to what looks like a jumper, and someone later tosses off a kill-myself line. The film does not linger on how. It is a grim city beat, then it moves on

A young victim is described as having been raped and left to die. The assault is not shown, but it is central to the killer's threat and the police search

A young victim is missing, and children later become hostages in a public standoff. Their danger raises the stakes well beyond an ordinary police chase

Racist insults and a slur aimed at a Black man appear in dialogue. They are part of the film's ugly period setting and warrant discussion

Rifles, a Magnum, knife wounds, and bloody aftermath show up in streets and hospitals. Deaths are clear without turning into torture close-ups. Weapons are filmed as the cop's everyday tools

The hero's gun and rule-breaking are filmed as effective and admirable. Younger viewers may need help separating the character's appeal from safe or lawful conduct

A partner talks about losing his wife to a crash, and victims pile up around the city. The film does not sit in mourning. Loss is fuel for the hunt, which can feel cold

Talk after watching
- The cop gets results by ignoring the rules. When does that stop being brave and start being dangerous?
- A missing girl is talked about as someone nobody will speak for. Who should have to carry that anger?
