Our take

Trevor, his nephew Sean and their guide Hannah head underground, where the adventure quickly becomes a series of escapes. Journey to the Center of the Earth has creatures, collapsing bridges and big drops, with very little blood. We would start around 9; a younger child may find the chases louder and scarier than the cheerful tone suggests.

Uplifting themes

Curiosity, teamwork, and believing in family bonds drive the rescue mission. Science curiosity is celebrated even when it leads into danger Sean learns to listen while Trevor and Hannah combine brains and field skills. Adults admit mistakes and adjust plans to keep the kid safer

Story (may spoil tone)

On a quest to find out what happened to his missing brother, a scientist, his nephew and their mountain guide discover a fantastic and dangerous lost world in the center of the earth.

A throwaway line mentions past drunkenness, and volcano smoke is used like a cigarette gag. Neither drinking nor smoking becomes a plot focus or a cautionary arc

Large prehistoric animals lunge from dark caverns, and rides along cliffs feel dizzying in 3D-style set pieces. Sensitive viewers may need a hand to hold during chases

Kids follow adults into unstable tunnels and leap gaps without safety gear. The film rewards bravery, so parents may want to remind viewers not to explore mines
