Why our age differs

Official is PG. We land on 12+ because the dinosaur attacks are long and intense, a few deaths are grisly, and two children are in real danger for much of the film

Our take

Jurassic Park pairs wonder at living dinosaurs with intense creature attacks. Once the park's safety fails, a T. rex and raptors hunt people, several deaths are grisly, and two children spend long stretches in danger. Language is mild, with some smoking and social drinking. We put it at around PG and up because the sustained fear may be too much for younger or sensitive children.

Uplifting themes

Alongside the thrills sits a real caution about meddling with nature for profit, and a warm thread about an adult learning to care for the kids in his charge. Curiosity and responsibility both come through Grant grows from awkward with children to fiercely protective, and the scientists weigh the ethics of what has been built. A couple of adults put money and ego first, making a clear contrast Dinosaurs, DNA, fossils, and a dash of chaos theory all get a look in, sparking plenty of real curiosity about science. It wears the learning lightly, but it is genuinely there

Story (may spoil tone)

A wealthy entrepreneur secretly creates a theme park featuring living dinosaurs drawn from prehistoric DNA. Before opening day, he invites a team of experts and his two eager grandchildren to experience the park and help calm anxious investors. However, the park is anything but amusing as the security systems go off-line and the dinosaurs escape.

Talk after watching

  • The park is built to make money from nature with little caution. What do you and your kids think about the risks of that choice?
  • The dinosaur attacks are genuinely intense. How did your child cope with the scarier scenes, and what helped afterwards?
