Our take

Jurassic World turns a dinosaur theme park into an intense creature thriller. Dinosaurs attack throughout, several people die, and winged creatures descend on a crowd. Two boys spend much of the film in danger, which can be stressful to watch. Blood is limited, and language and drinking are mild. We put it at around 10 and up with a parent nearby, though younger children may find the attacks too frightening.

Uplifting themes

Courage, quick thinking, and looking out for family carry the heroes through, and the film raises questions about treating living animals as products. The message sits under the spectacle The lead pair grow braver and more responsible as the crisis unfolds, and the older boy steps up to protect his brother. Some adults, though, are reckless or driven by profit

Story (may spoil tone)

Twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park, Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond.

A few deaths land with real sadness, and there is a brief thread about the boys' parents heading for divorce. It is touched on lightly and never dwelt on

Talk after watching

  • The park treats living dinosaurs as attractions to sell. What do we owe animals we keep for our own use?
  • The brothers stay calm and help each other when things go wrong. How does your family handle a scary situation?
