Our take

Dredd and a rookie judge fight their way through a tower controlled by a drug gang. The shootings and executions come often, and the slow-motion drug effect makes bloody injuries linger on screen. Strong swearing adds to the harsh tone. We would keep this for 16 and up.

Uplifting themes

Anderson's empathy contrasts with Dredd's hardness, hinting that justice might need more than force. The film still relishes action, so any moral is understated Anderson shows courage and moral growth as she learns the job. Dredd is loyal to the law but rarely gentle, so he is a complicated example for teens

Story (may spoil tone)

In the future, America is a dystopian wasteland. The latest scourge is Ma-Ma, a prostitute-turned-drug pusher with a dangerous new drug and aims to take over the city. The only possibility of stopping her is an elite group of urban police called Judges, who combine the duties of judge, jury and executioner to deliver a brutal brand of swift justice. But even the top-ranking Judge, Dredd, discovers that taking down Ma-Ma isn’t as easy as it seems in this explosive adaptation of the hugely popular comic series.

Talk after watching

  • Dredd acts as judge, jury, and executioner with few checks. What would it mean if police had that much power in real life?
  • Anderson is still learning while people die around her. How do soldiers and officers cope with first-day trauma?
