Why our age differs

Official is PG. We say 12+ because monster attacks and frequent coarse language keep the trek harder than most PG family films

Our take

Love and Monsters is a creature-filled adventure with giant bugs, chases, and people talking about bloody kills in a ruined world. The hero is likeable and the dog helps, but monster attacks still get loud and gross for a stretch. The s-word, a-word, and plenty of hell and damn ride along the road. The creature peril and coarse language make this more intense than a gentle family adventure.

Uplifting themes

Courage, kindness to animals, and asking for help carry the hero farther than bravado alone. The film rewards growing up, not toughness for show Joel learns from guides who protect others, and loyalty to a dog stays central. Flawed adults still model care under pressure

Story (may spoil tone)

Seven years since the Monsterpocalypse began, Joel Dawson has been living underground in order to survive. But after reconnecting over radio with his high school girlfriend Aimee, Joel decides to venture out to reunite with her, despite all the dangerous monsters that stand in his way.

The s-word lands often, with a-word, b-word, hell, and damn in the mix. Swearing tracks the panic and road-trip banter more than cold rage

Kisses and crush talk sit inside the reunion story as Joel pushes toward someone he misses. Nothing moves past mild romance or implied longing

Someone offers beer and jokes about brewing after a stretch of survival talk. Alcohol is a brief social beat once people feel safe enough to celebrate

Roaring monsters, sudden attacks, and ruined landscapes keep the trek tense. The humour softens some jolts without erasing the chase energy

Joel hears that a parent died in the monster years, and loss shapes why people stay underground. Grief is named more than staged as a funeral

Talk after watching

  • Joel leaves safety to face something he is not ready for. When is courage worth the risk, and when is it just reckless?
  • A dog and odd allies help him survive. How do friendships change when the world feels broken?
