Bye Bye Birdie is a colourful musical about teen fandom and a farewell TV kiss before a singer leaves for military service. The songs are playful, but the crushes and innuendo are a big part of it. There are also cigarettes, a vodka joke and a homemade stink bomb played for laughs. We put it at 10+ for kids ready for the romance and mild mischief.
Uplifting themes
Friendship, young love, and standing up to overbearing adults keep bubbling through the songs. The town learns to laugh at its own frenzy over fame Rosie pushes for a real life beyond showbiz schemes, and Kim tries to balance a crush with loyalty to her boyfriend. Many adults around them are comic fools
Story (may spoil tone)
