Our take

Ninja Assassin is a loud action revenge film about a killer raised by a secret clan who turns against his handlers. Blade fights are frequent, bloody, and designed to look spectacular, with severed limbs and heavy arterial spray in several set pieces. Strong language, mostly the f-word and the s-word, runs through the raids and interrogations. The gore is sustained and graphic, and young trainees are shown being hardened into killers

Story (may spoil tone)

Ninja Assassin follows Raizo, one of the deadliest assassins in the world. Taken from the streets as a child, he was transformed into a trained killer by the Ozunu Clan, a secret society whose very existence is considered a myth. But haunted by the merciless execution of his friend by the Clan, Raizo breaks free from them and vanishes. Now he waits, preparing to exact his revenge.

Sword fights, assassinations, and clan punishments fill the runtime with little pause. Heroes and villains both cut people down in long, showy battles

Lots of strong swearing, mostly the f-word, plus the s-word and damn in raids and panic. The language matches the brutal action tone

A character is ordered to get undressed during a tense moment, and there is brief romantic talk of a kiss. Nudity is not the focus beside the combat

Someone asks about smoking during a clinical-sounding clean-up instruction after a fight. It is a passing beat in the action, not a drug storyline

Night raids, silent killers, and sudden executions keep a horror-action chill going. Kids in training and ambush killings make the atmosphere mean

Children are taken into the clan and drilled into killers through harsh training. A young friend's deadly punishment hangs over the revenge plot

Arterial spray, severed limbs, and close blade work are the film's calling card. Weapon detail and wound spectacle stay high for most fight scenes

Martial arts and blade flourishes are filmed like cool choreography. Younger teens may copy the pose-and-slash swagger even though the gore shows the cost

Talk after watching

  • Raizo was trained to kill from childhood. What does the film suggest loyalty costs when a group demands violence?
  • The action treats sword fights like spectacle. Does stylish violence make brutality easier to shrug off?
