Our take

This sequel keeps the series formula of heavy, stylised combat, with assassinations, battles, and undead ghost warriors. Killing is frequent though the gore stays modest, and the language runs from mild to moderate, with a few harsher words and some crude toilet humour. There is wine and tavern drinking, some cheeky flirting, and a passing brothel reference, but nothing explicit. Supernatural menace and a kidnapping add a few darker beats. We put this at 13 because the fighting never lets up, even when the blood stays modest.

Uplifting themes

Redemption, loyalty, and defending the helpless against a tyrant drive the plot. As with the series, a lot gets solved with a blade, so the heroics come with a caveat worth raising The hero is loyal and protective and picks up some ragtag allies along the way, but violence is his main tool. Decent intentions, rough methods

Story (may spoil tone)

Since his triumphant rise to power in the original blockbuster "The Scorpion King", Mathayus' kingdom has fallen and he's lost his queen to plague. Now an assassin for hire, he must defend a kingdom from an evil tyrant and his ghost warriors for the chance to regain the power and glory he once knew. Starring Ron Perlman ("Hellboy") and Billy Zane ("Titanic"), and featuring 6-time WWE champion Dave Bautista and UFC star Kimbo Slice, "The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption" takes "The Mummy" phenomenon to an all-new level of epic action and non-stop adventure.

Mathayus has lost his queen to plague before the story starts, which gives him a weary, grieving edge. It sits in the background and never becomes a focus

Talk after watching

  • Mathayus starts out working as a paid assassin. How does the film want us to feel about that?
  • The humour and the violence sit close together here. Did the jokes change how the fighting landed for you?
