The Croods follows a prehistoric family forced from their cave when their world begins to change. The film is funny and warm, but chases, toothy creatures, dark caves, and danger to the father make the action nearly constant. Language is very mild and romance amounts to a gentle teen crush. Most children around 8 and up should be fine; younger ones may want a parent nearby for the scares.
Uplifting themes
The heart of the story is a family learning to stick together while embracing new ideas instead of hiding from them. Grug slowly learns to trust his daughter and to value curiosity, and the film is warm about change and courage Eep is brave and curious, and Guy quietly models thinking things through and inventing solutions. Grug starts out stubborn and fearful but grows into a more open and loving dad by the end
Story (may spoil tone)
The prehistoric Croods family live in a particularly dangerous moment in time. Patriarch Grug, his mate Ugga, teenage daughter Eep, son Thunk, and feisty Gran gather food by day and huddle together in a cave at night. When a more evolved caveman named Guy arrives on the scene, Grug is distrustful, but it soon becomes apparent that Guy is correct about the impending destruction of their world.

Several creatures are genuinely toothy and menacing, and long stretches happen in dark caves or a world that is breaking apart. Younger children may find the monsters and the sense of danger a bit much, even though it all ends happily
