Our take

Scary Movie 3 spoofs horror and alien films with cartoon scares and a steady stream of adult jokes. Sex gags, drug references, and moderate swearing are more prominent than the bloodless parody violence. We put it at around M and up; younger children will miss much of the humour and still hear plenty of crude material.

Uplifting themes

There is not much to take away beyond a cheerful willingness to poke fun at hit movies. The film is built for quick gags, and that is about all it offers The characters are broad comic types written mainly to set up the next joke. None of them are meant as examples to follow, and the film is fine with that

Story (may spoil tone)

News anchorwoman Cindy Campbell has to investigate mysterious crop circles and killing video tapes, and help the President stop an alien invasion in the process.

Violence is broad and cartoonish, with slapstick fights, a comic boxing match and spoof horror attacks lifted from other films. Nobody gets hurt in a way the film takes seriously

Swearing is frequent, mostly the s-word along with words like b-word and a-word, and there is at least one use of the f-word. It is a steady stream of comic cursing, more goofy than aggressive

Sex jokes recur, including references to porn and a couple killed while nude. The humour is suggestive, with no explicit sex shown

Alcohol and smoking appear for laughs, with a character getting drunk on vodka and cigarettes passed around. There is also a throwaway joke about crystal meth

The scares are parodies, with a creepy girl crawling out of a television and alien attacks played for giggles. The horror imagery is familiar but defused by the silliness around it

People die as part of the horror spoofs and guns appear in gags, but any blood is brief and cartoonish. Nothing lingers or looks real, and the jokes defuse it fast

Talk after watching

  • A lot of the jokes work only if you have seen the films being spoofed. Which ones did you recognise?
  • The comedy relies on being rude and shocking. When does that kind of humour stop being funny for you?
