Why our age differs

Official is MA 15+. We say 13+ because the buddy-cop jokes sit on top of the guns, and the tone is loud comedy as much as crime.

Our take

Lethal Weapon 4 is a fast action comedy with frequent shootouts, wrecked cars, and a long martial-arts fight. The f-word and s-word are common, and a newborn is briefly caught in police danger during a smuggling case. Heroic joking does not remove the real weapons and injuries. ClearAge's editorial age is 13+, while the displayed official rating is MA15+; follow the official restriction where it applies.

Uplifting themes

Partners show up for each other and for family, even when the job is ugly. Loyalty is the warm thread. It still solves most problems with a gun and a quip Murtaugh tries to be a decent dad and grandad while the streets go loud. Riggs is braver than he is careful. Neither is a clean model, but they do protect people Older teens might clock how smuggling and counterfeit money get dressed up as buddy comedy. It is still a popcorn sequel. Any lesson is accidental

Story (may spoil tone)

With personal crises and age weighing in on them, LAPD officers Riggs and Murtaugh must contend with a deadly Chinese crime lord trying to get his brother out of prison.

Detectives trade fire on streets, a freeway, and a dock, then a long martial-arts brawl. People are shot and beaten while jokes keep flying. The hits look real and they keep coming

Lots of strong swearing, especially the f-word, through chases and station banter. The s-word, a-word, hell, damn, and b-word sit beside it. It is cop-movie chatter from the first minutes

Buddy talk covers underwear, kissing, and sleeping around, plus a wedding kiss. The jokes are crude more than sexy. There is no full sex scene driving the plot

A crime boss is asked about selling heroin, and later someone pours tequila. Drinking is casual bar stuff. The drug line is interrogation colour, not a use scene

Night raids, a runaway tanker, and a crime lord who does not bluff keep the pressure up. A birth during a smuggling bust is chaotic. The jokes do not fully take the sting out

A woman gives birth during a smuggling-boat raid, leaving a newborn briefly caught in the police chaos. The infant is not targeted, but the scene is tense

A cop makes a green-card crack and gets called racist to his face. Hate-crime talk also comes up around a colleague. It is a few beats inside the buddy noise, not the whole film

Guns are present throughout the raids and shootouts. People die and some blood is visible, though the film avoids sustained close-ups of wounds

A killing of an ordinary person hits one cop hard, and he rages about people dying in this town. The sadness sits under the jokes. Family news about a baby runs beside that anger

Talk after watching

  • Riggs and Murtaugh keep making the case personal. When does loyalty help a partner, and when does it make the job more dangerous?
  • A green-card crack is called racist on the spot. How would your teen answer a joke that punches down like that?
