Why our age differs

Official is M. We say 17+ because shootouts, strong language, and cynical violence push past a soft mature action age

Our take

The Last Boy Scout is a hard-edged early-90s action comedy packed with shootouts, corpses, and wall-to-wall strong swearing. Strip-club culture, crude sexual talk, and a sports-gambling conspiracy sit beside smoking and drinking. Joe's marriage is strained by an affair, while Jimmy still carries the death of his pregnant wife. Joe's teenage daughter is also put in real danger. We land at 17 and up because the gunfights, football-world corruption, and hard-edged 90s action language need near-adult viewers

Story (may spoil tone)

Somewhere in Los Angeles, the city of broken dreams, a stripper is murdered. Now, the private detective she had hired and her ex-footballer boyfriend are going to find her murderer... if they don't kill each other first. But the more they dig, the deeper they become enmeshed in a web of extortion, blackmail and corrupt politics hidden beneath the surface of professional football.

Legalising sports gambling and fixing the league sit at the heart of the conspiracy. Bribes and bets are how power moves, not a casino montage

Jimmy speaks about losing his pregnant wife in a car crash. Gambling and drug problems followed that loss, while deaths in the current case add to the bitterness

Talk after watching

  • Joe and Jimmy trade insults while trying to do the right thing. Can humour hide real hurt, and when does it stop helping?
  • The plot uses football and gambling for power. Where do you see money warping a sport you watch?
