Our take

The Purge: Anarchy follows people trapped outside during a night when murder is legal. Hunts, shootings, bloody injuries, and pleas for mercy make the violence frequent and harsh. Strong swearing is near-constant, while one father's grief drives his actions. We put it at around 17 and up, with a parent nearby to discuss the fear and revenge that shape the story.

Uplifting themes

Protecting strangers beats pure revenge by the end of the night. Small kindness still matters when the city goes mad. The lesson sits under a lot of blood and noise Leo keeps choosing to shield people even when he wanted payback. Ordinary folks try to stay human under extreme fear. Nobody is a clean hero, but courage shows up It can spark talk about what laws are for and who gets hurt when violence is celebrated. That is a thin civics lesson under a horror premise. Do not expect nuance every scene

Story (may spoil tone)

One night per year, the government sanctions a 12-hour period in which citizens can commit any crime they wish -- including murder -- without fear of punishment or imprisonment. Leo, a sergeant who lost his son, plans a vigilante mission of revenge during the mayhem. However, instead of a death-dealing avenger, he becomes the unexpected protector of four innocent strangers who desperately need his help if they are to survive the night.
