Why our age differs

Official is PG. We say 7+ because the flood threat and predator chases are a step up from the gentlest preschool cartoons, even with the jokes

Our take

Ice Age: The Meltdown sends the herd toward higher ground as the ice melts. Slapstick chases and a looming flood may startle sensitive young children, though the humour stays gentle. Language is limited to a little 'crap', and there is a playful kiss joke. We put it at around 7 and up, with a parent nearby for the louder water scenes.

Uplifting themes

Friends stick together and try to save the whole valley, not just themselves. Looking out for oddball pals is the point. Warm talk after about teamwork Manny, Sid, and Diego keep showing up for one another even when they bicker. New faces learn belonging along the way. Easy role models for younger kids Kids may ask how ice melts and why floods happen after the valley threat. Keep answers simple and hopeful. The film is comedy first, science second

Story (may spoil tone)

Diego, Manny and Sid return in this sequel to the hit animated movie Ice Age. This time around, the deep freeze is over, and the ice-covered earth is starting to melt, which will destroy the trio's cherished valley. The impending disaster prompts them to reunite and warn all the other beasts about the desperate situation.

Slapstick launches, comic chases, and animal scrapes keep the herd moving. Impact is cartoon, not bloody. Little kids who hate loud bumps may still cover their eyes

Crap pops out a couple of times on the journey when the herd is packing and grumbling. That is as strong as the talk gets. Easy to answer if someone repeats it at dinner

A playful missed-me kiss gag runs as a chase joke between friends on the trail. No romance scene beyond that cheeky beat. Fine for most primary-schoolers

Melting ice and an approaching flood provide the largest scares. Predator encounters and a joke about Sid being kidnapped add brief tension, softened by humour

Talk after watching

  • The herd has to warn everyone about danger they cannot see yet. How do you get people to listen?
  • Sid jokes about being kidnapped by tiny sloths. When is a scare funny, and when is it too much?
