Our take

A sheriff's unit and a crew of robbers circle each other before a major heist. Den of Thieves is long, loud and full of macho talk, with lethal gun battles, a hostage scene and near-constant strong swearing. There is brief topless nudity too. We would keep it for 16 and up.

Uplifting themes

Loyalty to your own team is the main theme, but neither side is a model of good behaviour. The film does not push a clear lesson about the harm done Both the sheriff's squad and the crew are skilled and loyal to their own, yet they break rules and use violence freely. Few of them are worth copying

Story (may spoil tone)

A gritty crime saga which follows the lives of an elite unit of the LA County Sheriff's Dept. and the state's most successful bank robbery crew as the outlaws plan a seemingly impossible heist on the Federal Reserve Bank.

Characters throw around homophobic and ableist insults in rough banter, and the cops put people down to show power. The slurs are casual and the film mostly moves past them

Talk after watching

  • The cops and the crew act a lot alike. What makes someone a good guy or a bad guy in this film?
  • The robbers plan every detail of the heist. What did the film make you think about the cost of that kind of crime?
